Dubai #7 - Al Ain

The oasis city Al Ain is situated at a wadi 160km southeast of Dubai. The 90 minutes ride across the desert costs approximately 5,- € (12 TL) - well, fuel isn't expensive in the UAE ... ;). On the left hand side the landscape partly looks like what is always shown in photo books: endlessly waving dunes. On the right hand side there is more vegetation and civilisation. Together with Amarjit, who was my host in Dubai thanks to couchsurfing, I went out of Dubai for one day ...

The oasis is just a few minutes car ride out of the city. The ride leads through pebbly and partly hilly desert with camel farms right and left. The oasis itself isn't like in films: a romatic little place with big palm trees and a little lake. In fact it's a quiet big parc just on the street with little palm trees, modern parking places, a restaurant, playgrounds, bus stops ... As an european I really wondered the first seconds what's so special about this place ... ;). Well, my romantic arabien dream just doesn't get satisfied here ... :P

Al Ain itself is a nice little town, at the same time modern and traditional. The two towers with the digital displays are part of a mosque ...

At the outskirt of the city close to a big shopping mall there is a camel market. Of course a must see for us ... ;). Anyway, also here reality is not what we dreamed of. Despite of a hullabaloo, free walking camels and rising desert dust all camels are hold in compounds. The potential clients are coming by car, driving a bit around before entering one compound and finally somehow making their decision. The animals are separated from the flock by the help of sticks and ropes and then are put on trucks or even pickups (!). The atmosphere was a bit strange, we didn't fell very ease and left after a while.

Mutter und Kind ... :)

Mother and child ... :)

Wow, Kamele haben wunderschöne Augen!
